Complementing the primary residence is a two-story gatehouse and a four-car carriage house with a chauffeur’s quarters. The estate’s flat, flower-filled grounds and meandering pathways lead to a rear terrace offering yet another vista of the Arroyo Seco. Over 25 local interior and landscape designers restored and reimagined the historic Tudor manor, crafting each room and garden space to revitalize and respect the home’s original architecture while infusing modern elements. Designers featured in the showcase include Elisa Read, Steven Cordrey, Rachel Duarte, Rachel Scheff, Amy Peltier, Carmine Sabatella and B.

A post-war boom of students forced the school to expand, and in 1949, it began awarding bachelor’s and master’s degrees in arts. It became accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1955, and later by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. With a current enrollment of approximately 2,423 students (57% female and 43% male, representing more than 50 countries), the College has a student/faculty ratio of 8 to 1. ArtCenter offers 11 undergraduate and 10 graduate degrees in a wide array of industrial design, visual and applied arts disciplines, as well as minors for undergraduate students in Business, Creative Writing, Material Science, Research, and Social Innovation. Internationally renowned artist Robert Vargas (@therobertvargas) will receive an honorary doctorate degree from ArtCenter College of Design and deliver the commencement address at the College’s spring graduation ceremony on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 10 a.m. Following the private ceremony, which will be livestreamed at artcenter.edu, the approximately 300 graduating students will exhibit their work at Grad Show, a free public showcase open to the public from noon–5 p.m. The exterior was simply sandblasted to reveal the original raw materiality and strong building volumes.
The landmark mansion was built in 1902 by architect Joseph J. Blick for Gertrude Potter Daniels, who paid $15,000 for the shingle-style home. In 1905, Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes—known as the Silver Queen thanks to the source of her late husband’s fortune—purchased the home and soon made it her own. In 1922, she spent $37,000 to have the Postle Company of Los Angeles, who also built the Pasadena Playhouse, remodel it into an English Tudor Revival–style mansion, giving it the regal exterior that remains today. The Potter Daniels Manor is likely recognizable to many as a backdrop for numerous films, television shows and advertisements over the years. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. The first in a planned series of buildings is the Graduate Fine Arts & Public Education, or South Campus, Building. We offer BFA programs in Creative Direction, Film, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration and Photography and Imaging and BS programs in Entertainment Design, Interaction Design, Product Design, Spatial Experience Design, and Transportation Design.
About ArtCenter College of Design
In addition, to open up the building windows and skylights were strategically cut into the thick street-front concrete walls and the roof, bringing light into classrooms and studios while making the program visible to the street. The intention was to create a unique system for light and environmental control while bringing in a filtered light that is critical for drawing and design studio instruction. The skylight system is constructed of three translucent ETFE films stretched on a custom-designed structural frame. These layers are inflated or deflated to adjust the amount of natural light and heat entering the building. The sculptural elements rest in the rooftop garden that is covered in native grasses and form the boundaries of what is now the campus quad. The college provides undergraduate and postgraduate programs in art and design, including interdisciplinary programs, and courses in advertising, transportation design, illustration and environmental design.
The college logo is an orange circle, also known as the ArtCenter "Dot," which has been a part of the school's identity since its inception by founder Tink Adams[1] and a small number of colleagues. So far, the center has been in the works for six years, and it is currently employing a long-term land lease with the city on the site where it will be built, right where the current amphitheater is. The next six months will involve receiving feedback from city officials any other people or groups who could be impacted by the center.
In addition to Vargas’ commencement address, graduation ceremony attendees will also hear from Nini Chen, recipient of the Spring 2024 Student Leadership Award, and Satoko Okuno, the graduating class’ valedictorian, who will both deliver speeches. In 2021, the City of Los Angeles honored Vargas by naming September 8 Robert Vargas Day, in recognition of his contributions to the cultural life of the city, to the arts and as a leading creative force. Then last year, he was honored again by the City of Los Angeles, which designated the intersection of First Street and State Street as Robert Vargas Square. He recently completed a 150-foot-tall mural of Los Angeles Dodger Shohei Ohtani on the outer wall of The Miyako Hotel’s flagship Little Tokyo hotel in Downtown L.A. A contemporary artist known for his mixed-media portraits, murals and live events, Vargas has painted murals around the globe, from his native Boyle Heights neighborhood to Paris. His work-in-progress “Angelus,” in downtown Pershing Square, is being painted on the side of a 14-story apartment building and is set to break the Guinness World Record for the largest mural completed by a single artist.
